The history of Norman Limited mirrors the changing fortunes of the Island. The company was started in 1840 making barrels for the fishing industry. That led to the manufacture of barrels, baskets and trays for the booming tomato and potato industries in the early twentieth century. The trading links with Scandinavian and other Baltic timber producers were invaluable when Jersey needed building materials after the First World War. The Company continued to develop and even found ways to keep trading during the Occupation. The construction industry began to take off in earnest during the 1950’s and 60’s and so our builders’ merchant side of the business grew.
