Lisa Le Brocq is a Jersey born designer and silversmith. Inspired by textures in the island landscape, Lisa creates beautiful contemporary silver jewellery. Here she tell us a little more about her business and the inspiration behind her designs.
I’m Lisa, I design and make contemporary silver jewellery. I was born in Jersey but lived away for many years studying, exhibiting and working as a Jewellery Designer, until finally returning to the island in 2003. I have an 8 year old son called Charlie and we love living on such a beautiful and inspiring island.
I have always made things but I began to take jewellery making seriously in 1994, when I started my training on a 2 year National Diploma course at Berkshire College of Art and Design. Then gained a BA(Hons) in Applied Arts at Plymouth College of Art and Design in 2000, specialising in Repouse, Acid-Etching and Rolled Textures. I completed my training by attending Bishopsland Educational Trust Residency in South Oxfordshire in 2001-2002.
I describe myself as a 'Texture Collector'. I am very attracted to natural shapes and forms and my work is always covered in textures which are tiny pictures and stories of the things I find when beachcombing or on country walks. I bring samples and images of textures back to my studio and begin sketching and experimenting at the workbench, using traditional and inventive techniques.
My typical work day is brill! I like to get a bit of fresh air at the very beginning of the day, so I go for a good walk. Then go home and put the kettle on. While my tea is brewing, I lay out all the tools and materials I need and make a list of what I am going to do. Then I don’t really come back up for air until I have to do the school run!
There are a couple of designs that have been really popular, last year I designed an owl and he has been a huge hit, and my shell pieces are so popular I can't keep up!
