Island produce and hand-crafted products are being showcased in the heart of St Helier thanks to an initiative by the parish to promote home-grown talent and local provenance.
Members of the Genuine Jersey Products Association will be promoting their locally-produced goods from a stall in Brook Street - the short cut next to Hamon’s which links King Street and Library Place. The parish is providing space for association members on Saturdays throughout the summer to help raise awareness of goods that are produced in Jersey and to animate the centre of town for local and visitors.
The Chief Executive of Genuine Jersey, John Garton, thanked the Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, for giving members such a great opportunity to reach a wider audience and on the busiest trading street in the Island.
‘Although Genuine Jersey has been championing the benefits of supporting locally-produced goods long before ‘buying local’ became a popular movement, it is still important to get the message out to Islanders and visitors to look for the Genuine Jersey mark before they buy. Many of the members take part in the popular farm and craft markets and other local events, but being able to market their products in the heart of the Island’s shopping centre, even for just one day, is a real bonus,’ he said.
Genuine Jersey members will be showcasing their products and produce on Saturdays between 9 am and 6 pm, up to 28 August.
The Genuine Jersey members who will be promoting their goods and the Association from the Brook Street stall are; photographer Kevin Brace of Nature in the Frame, Jersey Brewery; Libby Hughes of Lavender-Hill Cards, local preserves from The Chilli Kitchen, Nanette Regan’s textile toys; Jersey Pottery locally-made ceramics; Sheila Birch Photography; Jane James Handmade Coastal Ceramics; pork and beef from Me and the Farmer, textiles, art and ceramics by artist Rosemary Blackmore and Beverley Speck’s bespoke home furnishing textiles.
Mr Garton said he hoped the Brook Street initiative would lead to greater awareness of the Association and its Members amongst both visitors and locals alike.
