The Jersey Food Festival – nine days of fun and feasting when local produce is at its seasonal best – begins on 19 May with a two-day al fresco food fair at the Waterfront.
Organised by Jersey Tourism and the Genuine Jersey Products Association, the festival aims to showcase the very best local products, food, drink and talent - as well as exploring a wealth of food-related activities to be experienced around the Island from bite size to banquets.
The Food Fair is being held in front of the Radisson Blu Hotel and alongside the Elizabeth Marina. It will feature stalls selling local products, live entertainment, food and producer demonstrations and a delicious selection of local food and drink. Entry is free and the fair is open from 11 am to 6 pm.
The festival continues until 27 May with a packed seven-day programme of activities, the highlights of which include fine dining in Michelin-star restaurants, low water rambles, foraging for limpets and seaweed and wild herbs, food and ale trails, animal husbandry, fishing, brewery and farm tours and chocolate tasting - as well as a ‘cider and sausage’ evening under the stars!
Jersey Tourism’s Product Development Manager Donna Le Marrec wants Islanders and visitors to enjoy Jersey’s famed hospitality by sampling the very best the Island has to offer.
‘The Island is an amazing place for anyone who loves food and our producers and chefs can compete with anywhere in the world when it comes to quality fresh produce and good dining. Jersey's reputation as a food destination and producer of top-quality produce is growing, and we hope that the Jersey Food Festival will soon become established on the food map of the British Isles,’ she said.
Genuine Jersey’s chief executive John Garton said there was never a better month to showcase local produce. ‘May is the most fantastic time to enjoy local produce when it is in its seasonal prime and nothing can beat that freshest of tastes. The festival, with its emphasis on our premium produce, Jersey Royals, diary and shellfish, not only promotes seasonality, it also showcases the passion that local producers, fishermen, restaurateurs and chefs put into everything they do,’ he said.
Food festivals are popular events held the length of breadth of the UK and around the world. Not only do they focus on local fresh produce and producers, they also attract visitors from far afield. The Jersey Food festival is in its second year.
