Aspiring young Jamie Oliver’s will learn first-hand the benefits of cooking with locally grown ingredients as part of next week’s St Aubin’s Food Fair sponsored by the Genuine Jersey Products Association (GJPA). The cookery school Minichefs, which encourages children to experiment with food and learn the basics of cooking, will be inviting youngsters to help prepare and cook a dish using exclusively local vegetables. The event will take place during the Food Fair organised by Jersey Tourism on Sunday, September 12th from midday to 6pm.
Minichefs founder Claire Lyons says: “We’re delighted to be involved with this fun event which will give youngsters the opportunity to taste, touch and smell fresh, local ingredients and learn the difference between the manufactured pre-packed foods which are targeted at children these days.
“We will be inviting youngsters to turn up and join in to help chop and prepare the vegetables for a Fabulous Fried Rice Dish while at the same time learning more about local ingredients. After all their hard work the children will be able to enjoy the fruits of their labour”.
To highlight its involvement in the Food Fair, Genuine Jersey will have its own marquee outside St Brelade’s Parish Hall where it will hold different food demonstrations, displays and talks every hour between midday and 6pm.
Marketing Co-ordinator Catherine Vint says: “As well as getting the Genuine Jersey message across to adults we felt it was important to give youngsters the chance to take part in a fun and interactive session that would enable them to learn more about the origins and benefits of local produce.
“Having given a number of talks to local schoolchildren about Genuine Jersey I know there is a real interest amongst youngsters to learn more about how and where their food comes from. The challenge for us is thinking of new and exciting ways to get that information across and I can think of no better approach than involving Minichefs who are experts in their field”.
