Pumpkin carvers make a ghoulish mark

Date: 09/10/2006 | Posted by John Garton
THE Genuine Jersey Products Association is seeking out the Island’s most creative pumpkin carvers as part of Jersey Tourism’s Harvest and Hallowe’en Festival this week.

A free pumpkin carving competition is being held at the Artisan Showcase 2006, which is organised by Art in the Frame and takes place between 12th and 15th October at the Royal Jersey Showground in Trinity. This year’s showcase promises to be the biggest yet and will feature demonstrations, workshops and displays from more than 50 local exhibitors.

Pumpkin carvers of all ages can show off their skills in two categories – the best character (eg. Bart Simpson or Shrek) and the best Hallowe’en theme.

Root vegetables and knives will be available between the following times and adequate supervision from an adult is a must:

  • Friday 13th, 1.00 – 8.00pm

  • Saturday 14th, 1.00 – 7.00pm

  • Sunday 15th, 1.00 – 3.30pm.

Judging takes place at 4.00pm on Sunday 15th and the winners will be announced at 4.30pm by Pat Robson of Art in the Frame, who is also supplying the prizes. Entry is free and Genuine Jersey has sourced 200 pumpkins for the competition so there shouldn’t be any disappointment for those who wish to make their suitably ghoulish mark.

Catherine Vint is the merchandising co-ordinator for Genuine Jersey and she will be judging and presenting the awards. She says that the competition will inspire young and old alike. “We’ve added a seasonal activity to the wonderfully varied exhibitions at the Artisan Showcase. As well as the superb displays of arts, ceramics, jewellery and textiles from some of the most talented craft workers in the Island, there’s now something to keep the young at heart occupied too,” she said.

New award from Genuine Jersey

Once again, a series of special awards promises to make the Artisan Showcase a very different event from other craft fairs. This year there will be a number of prizes up for grabs, including a new one for the most popular exhibitor from Jersey, which is sponsored by Genuine Jersey and voted for by the public. The presentation takes place at 4.30pm on Sunday.

Entrance to the showcase is £3.00 for adults and £2.00 for students and OAPs. Children under 12 are free. A second visit to the showcase is half price on production of the previous ticket.
