A Genuine Jersey soapmaker is to make a clean start at the Harbour Gallery, St Aubin, with the launch of a brand new workshop and a new range of soaps. The top floor kitchen of the building has been converted and will be opened officially on Wednesday 29th March by Ken Syvret MBE, chairman of the Genuine Jersey Products Association.
The new venture is being run by Sue Chatterley of Jersey Soap. A well-established Genuine Jersey member, she has been operating from Samarès Manor for five years and will also retain a workshop there this summer. She produces hand-made soaps for both day-to-day use and as novelties and gifts.
At the Harbour Gallery she will be concentrating on her ‘Au Naturel’ range, which contains no colours or perfumes and can be used by people with sensitive skin or allergies. Jersey Soap also make a children’s range, which is glycerine based and can be painted with cosmetic dyes to give a stained glass effect. Using these products, the company will be able to host children’s parties both at the Harbour Gallery and in private homes.
“This is an exciting development for us and Genuine Jersey has been very helpful and supportive,” says Sue Chatterley. “The public are more and more interested in finding out whether the items they buy are local products and if they see the Genuine Jersey sticker they know exactly what they are buying. It’s also important for Genuine Jersey to show that it promotes products other than food as having a wide range will make the group stronger.”
Ken Syvret MBE has congratulated Jersey Soap on opening its new workshop. “This is a fantastic new facility which we hope will be used by locals and visitors alike. It’s especially heartening to see one of our established members going from strength to strength and spreading awareness of Genuine Jersey and what it is trying to achieve.”
The official opening ceremony is from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Wednesday 29th March, with an announcement by Mr Syvret at about 8pm. An exhibition by artist Peter Knight is opening on the same night.
