Taste the Passion Community Art Project

Date: 21/09/2010 | Posted by John Garton
A community art project to engage children with the Island’s fishing industry as part of Genuine Jersey’s Taste the Passion campaign is being held in St Brelade’s Bay on Sunday.

Local artist Tina Ellis-Brecknell will be inviting families to join her near the Wayside Slip to create a sculpture of a giant crab made from shells which this week are being painted bright colours by children from Mont Nicolle School.

Head teacher Colin Masterman said: “This is a bit of fun that we are delighted to be involved with. We are always encouraging the children to identify with the Island, and the fishing industry is an important part of our cultural heritage that they ought to be aware of. Many of our children spend time down on St Brelade’s Bay, so helping make an artistic sculpture down there seems like a natural thing to do. I am sure that many of them will pop down to assist on Sunday, having spent a few moments painting the component parts this week.’

The Chief Executive of Genuine Jersey, John Garton, said Taste the Passion was designed to encourage consumers to buy local and in doing so, support Island producers and the economy at a time when the home-grown produce was at it very best and most abundant.

‘Whether it is shellfish, dairy products, eggs, vegetables or fruit, come August and September there is the most fantastic choice of local produce available and in peak condition. Taste the Passion is a concerted effort by the States, Genuine Jersey, producers and retailers to ensure that the Island’s produce, some of the best in the world, is easily identifiable,’ he said.
