If you view soap as little more than a means of getting clean, then think again! These days all sorts of materials provide a blank canvas and the humble bar of soap is no exception.
To demonstrate how, Genuine Jersey Products Association member, Sue Chatterley, of the Samares Manor Soap Shop, is holding the Island’s first Soap Art workshops.
Aimed at both adults and children, the novel workshops will involve an afternoon of transforming blocks of transparent soap into colourful creations. This will be done using special dyes, which after a few days sink into the soaps and blend together.
The workshops will take place between 2.30pm-5.30pm on 14th and 15th May at the Harbour Gallery in St Aubin, as part of a ‘Blue’ art and craft exhibition, which in turn is part of Jersey Tourism’s ‘Out of the Blue’ programme.
Sue says that the seaside theme will be reflected in her workshops. Children will be able to paint fun-shaped soap shells and fish, while adults will be given the option of more complicated shapes, such as lighthouses and sailboats. For the more adventurous, there is also the chance to carve out your own seaside-themed shape from a plain block of translucent soap, before painting it. Templates will be available.
Participants will also have the chance to paint scallop shells with their own designs to create a soap dish. At the end of the workshop, the soaps and shells will be arranged and gift wrapped with an ‘I Made This’ label.
Sue says: “I have tried to create a workshop that is suitable for people of all ages and of all levels. It is something a bit different but also a good way of occupying children with an activity that is both creative and constructive.”
Kits for creating and painting your own soap at home will be available after the workshops and from Samares Manor Soap Shop for those who have been bitten by the Soap Art bug.
