Visitors to this year’s Country Fayre will be able to experience the best Jersey has offer in a marquee dedicated to Genuine Jersey products. It’s the first time the Genuine Jersey Products Association (GJPA) has been able to showcase the diversity of its members on this scale and demonstrates the rising success of the organisation, which was set up three years ago to promote locally-grown and hand-crafted goods.
The GJPA marquee will be in a prime location within the showground at the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society throughout the bank holiday weekend from 29th – 31st May. It will be open from 10am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday and 10am to 5pm on Monday.
Members who will be exhibiting in the Genuine Jersey marquee include: Bingies Berries, GJ Growers Ltd, Creative Stone Castings Ltd, Jersey Provender, Jersey Dairy, Jersey Lavender, La Mare Vineyards, Remi Couriard who produces fine furniture, Belles Fleurs Nursery, Samares Soaps and new member Diane Best who is the first lamb producer to join the association.
At the age of 33, Mark Bingle is one of the youngest Jersey-born growers in the Island. Having always been interested in farming, Mark set up Bingies Berries, five years ago growing soft fruit, including blackberries, loganberries, red and black currants and raspberries. Earlier this year the company expanded to larger premises in St Lawrence so that Mark can extend his growing season until the Autumn.
The Country Fayre will be the first opportunity for Genuine Jersey member Melanie Drummond, who runs Jersey Provender, to serve up a delicious variety of barbequed food with a number of her tasty locally made preserves and relishes using home-grown produce. Visitors will be able to enjoy home-made venison sausages with Provender Red Onion Marmalade, Jersey Scallops with "Devils Hole Hot Sauce" and Lamb Kebabs with Red Pepper Relish.
If visitors prefer something a little sweeter to eat, Jersey Dairy will be serving its range of ice creams and yoghurts.
The marquee will also feature a range of displays including bedding plants and hanging baskets, hand-crafted furniture, a range of products made using Jersey Lavender, home-made soaps molded into different shapes including Jersey cows and farm animals and creative stonework and balustrades.
GJPA marketing co-ordinator Catherine Vint says: “Genuine Jersey is going from strength to strength this season thanks to the willingness and enthusiasm of our members who are keen to get out and about and tell Islanders and visitors about the benefits of buying locally-made goods.
“Last year’s Country Fayre attracted 14,000 visitors and organisers are confident this year’s event will be even bigger and better. We hope everyone who attends will visit the Genuine Jersey marquee and see for themselves the fantastic wealth of skills and talents Jersey has to offer”.
